Reflecting on a Career in Process Management and Valve Automation
I began my journey in the Process Management and Valve Automation industry back in 1983. At the time, I was stepping into a world I knew almost nothing about. I didn’t have a background in engineering or automation—just a willingness to learn and a drive to succeed. Looking back now, more than four decades later, I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Fortunately, I had the privilege of being trained by some of the best minds in the business. These early mentors shaped the foundation of my career. Their knowledge, patience, and professionalism gave me a deep respect for the industry and a hunger to keep learning. Those lessons still guide me today.
My first major role was as Branch Manager and Territory Manager for Measurement and Control Technology. It was there that I really cut my teeth in the business. In just my second year with the company, I was honored with their one and only “Salesman of the Year” award, a recognition I’m still proud of to this day. It validated the hard work I had put in, and more importantly, it reinforced that I was on the right path.
Over the years, I’ve worked for a number of locally owned Pipe, Valve, and Fitting (PVF) companies, gaining insight into different aspects of the business and learning how to navigate various market segments. One of the most formative chapters in my career came in 1995 when I started the Valve Automation department at Consumers Pipe & Supply. At the time, the department didn’t exist—we were literally starting from scratch. I had the opportunity to help build that division from the ground up, and we grew it into a significant part of the business. It’s incredibly rewarding to look back and know that I was part of something foundational.
Building Value Through Precision and Partnership
In my time with companies like Flowserve and Caltrol, Inc., I managed and supported many large-scale, often confidential, projects across the Western United States. I’ve worked closely with a wide range of agencies and contractors, many of whom required strict discretion and detailed execution. These experiences helped me develop a sharp attention to detail and a deeper understanding of project management at every level.
I have covered almost every market segment—from mining and water treatment to food processing and semiconductors—each with its own challenges and opportunities. I take pride in delivering tailored solutions, whether for a simple upgrade or a complex rollout. What’s most rewarding is knowing that many of the systems I’ve helped design and optimize are still running efficiently and delivering value years later.
Rooted in the Desert, Driven by Purpose: A Lifelong Journey in Building and Connection
I’ve always worked in the Western U.S., and since 1983, Las Vegas has been home. I’m a self-proclaimed desert rat—I love the climate, the lifestyle, and the people. Living and working in Las Vegas has allowed me to stay connected to key industries and customers, while also enjoying the unique rhythm of life in the Southwest.
After more than 40 years in this industry, I still find joy in the work. The technology has evolved, the tools have changed, and the business has grown more complex, but the core of what we do remains the same: solve problems, serve customers, and build things that last.
I’m grateful for the journey so far and excited for what’s next. Whether you’re new to the industry or a seasoned veteran, there’s always more to learn, more relationships to build, and more value to deliver. Thanks for taking the time to read a bit of my story.
